Dietary Supplements containing Synephrine considered unsafe

Synephrine is a natural substance, which is contained in „fat burners“ mostly together with caffeine. It is often not mentioned in the list of ingredients, even if it is contained in high doses.

The food supplement is advertised as a „fat burner“. But effects on the body’s own fat burning were rejected by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) as scientifically not proven and therefore not approved by the EU as so-called health claims.

When caffeine and synephrine are combined, they can lead to elevated blood pressure, insomnia, heart racing or even an heart attack. If products containing synephrine and caffeine, advertised as „purely herbal“, this does not always mean that they can be classified as safe. Synephrine may not be added to dietary supplements in isolation, but it may be contained, e.g. as a natural ingredient of Citrus Aurantium.

Since high doses are not considered safe by the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), no more than 6.7 mg of synephrine per day should generally be taken in via dietary supplements.
